Sydney Pollack directs this film adaptation of the novel by John Grisham. Hotshot Harvard law graduate Mitch McDeere (Tom Cruise) is headhunted and enrolled by a small firm of lawyers based away from New York City, offering him a large pay package. When the FBI inform Mitch that the firm is a front for the illegal activities of the Mob, he investigates further, but it isn't long before Mitch finds himself entangled in a deadly war between both sides of the law.

The cast also includes Jeanne Tripplehorn, Gene Hackman and Gary Busey.
