During the American Civil War, Union Colonel Cord McNally (Wayne) is first captured by and then turns the tables on Confederate Captain Pierre Cordova (Jorge Rivero) and Sergeant Tuscarora Phillips (Chris Mitchum). When the war ends McNally returns to Texas where he learns that an unscrupulous sheriff is conducting a reign of terror in the town of Rio Lobo.
