Shyam Benegal directs this Hindi-language drama set during the early days of India's dairy development programme, which ultimately led to the once milk-deficient country becoming the world's largest producer of milk. Dr. Manohar Rao (Girish Karnad) and his team visit a poor village in Gujarat with the goal of setting up a dairy which will be owned and managed by the villagers.

However, if they are to have any chance of success, they must overcome distrust and caste prejudice while also navigating a delicate political situation. The cast also includes Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah and Anant Nag.
