When pretty maid Esther Waters (Kathleen Ryan) becomes romantically involved with William Latch (Dirk Bogarde), the male servant of the house, the relationship seems to hold promise. Esther's hopes are dashed, however, after William runs off with another woman, leaving her not only alone, but also pregnant. While Esther struggles to support her young son, she eventually encounters William again. Can the beleaguered Esther finally find happiness and stability? Based on the novel by George Moore.
